Amancio Ortega opened the first Zara store in 1975 in the center of A Coruña, Valencia, Spain. Ortega initially called the store Zorba, quoting the classic movie Zorba the Greek, but after learning that there was a brand of the same name two blocks away, they rearranged the letters to Zara.

In September 2010, Zara launched its online store. The site began in Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France. In November of the same year, Zara’s online shop expanded the service to five other countries; Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
